The third annual Max Malyuta Memorial
was held Saturday, October 17, 2009, at the
Blackstone Chess Center in Pawtucket, RI.
Over 30 players turned out to remember
Max,
who left us at the young age of 25, and to support
the causes of youth chess, and
meningitis awareness.
Dozens of onlookers came
to watch the action, and to show their support.
The winner of this year's tournament
was 14 year old Stuart Finney, with a clean sweep,
4 wins and no losses. Stuart got off to a good start by
defeating legendary master John Curdo in round one.
Ben Goldberg took second place with a score of 3-1,
losing only to Stuart in the second round.
In the Under 2000 section, Sebastian Gueller also
went undefeated at 4-0. Neil Fachon and John Perrotta
tied for second place at 3-1.
Yet another shutout came from Alexei Popov
in the Under 1600 section.
Three players tied for a distant second place at
2.5-1.5: Aleksandr Biyevetskiy,
Boris Zhevelyuk, and Cory Silva.
The proceeds from this occasion will help defray
the expenses of Rhode Island's Denker
representatives, the top high school boy and
girl, who will attend the U.S. Nationals in 2010.
Monies were raised for
meningitis awareness
as well.
