Garry Kimovich Kasparov became the youngest World Chess Champion in 1985 at the age of 22. He held the title until his defeat in 2000 to Vladimir Kramnik. From 1986 until his retirement in 2005, he maintained the highest Elo rating of all players, reaching a record breaking peak rating of 2851.

Kasparov was born Garry Weinstein, in Kasparov at age 11 Azerbaijan, to an Armenian mother and Jewish father. He began training at age 10 at Mikhail Botvinnik's chess school with coach Vladimir Makogonov. Garry won the Soviet Junior Championship in Tbilisi in 1976, scoring 7 points of 9, at age 13.
