This is the first of two games in round one of a double round robin. Time control was Game in 15 minutes, with no time delay. In the first round, GM Timur Gareev, the Blackstone Chess Festival Champion, was pitted against Rhode Island's top youth player, Stuart Finney.
GM Gareev secured a comfortable advantage early in the opening. Black's decision to play on the Queenside with 6... b5 before castling contributed greatly to his untimely demise. A safer alternative was c5, then bringing the King to safety as soon as possible. Nevertheless, Stuart got back into the game, and after the inaccurate 22. Nb3 the remarkable Qa6!? keeps Black in the fight. The rapid time control surely played a part here.
