Play the Scandinavian
Quality Chess · 2010
GM Christian Bauer advocates the main line of the Scandinavian Defense for the player of the Black pieces. His argument has two prongs, Black gets to dictate the course of the game, as exd5 is the only serious reply, leading to a predictable pawn structure: White Pawn on d4 held back by Black e6 and c6 Pawns.
The activity of the Black pieces, in spite of the lost tempi from the early Queen sortie, is his second key point. Bauer quickly points out how the move Nc3, taking advantage of the exposed Queen, has its own drawbacks. With the move c4 taken out of the immediate horizon, White has less potential for activity than in comparable lines of the Caro-Kann.
