The Open Games For Black:
Chess Stars · 2012
GM Ovethckin and GM Lysyj present the complement to their volume on the Berlin Defence. We now have a complete Repertoire for Black after 1.e4 e5. This includes defending against the King's Gambit, Vienna Game, Bishop's Opening, Four Knights, Scotch and Ponziani.
The main course is the Giuoco Piano, where the variations after 1.e4 e5 2.Nf3 Nc6 3.Bc4 Bc5 are examined, including the Evans Gambit. The repertoire bears some resemblance to what Mikhail Marin advocated in his work on the Open Games, with new developments to diffuse the efforts to disrupt this repertoire.
Both of these volumes are challenging enough for the expert player. They offer clear explanations of the plans in the target positions for the improving chess enthusiast. Serious 1.e4 players better take a look at both books lest they get caught off guard!
