Grandmaster Lev Psakhis enumerates the prerequisites for good tournament results in his preface: sensible opening knowledge, common sense, an understanding of the strategic laws of chess, good endgame play, precise calculation of variations two to four moves deep, and a flair for the attack.

He goes on to clarify the objectives of this book. This is for serious students in the 2000 to 2600 range, and the subject matter is the attack! He conveys the lessons by analysis of the games of great attacking legends. Eight chapters divide the material by opening or pawn structure, followed by Exercises. We get a generous helping of the wizardry of Mikhail Tal in this opus. Puzzle positions are sprinkled throughout the book to keep the reader engaged.

Born in Russia in the heyday of Soviet Chess, Lev Psakhis is an Israeli Grandmaster. He is two time winner of both the Soviet Championship and the Israeli Championship. Psakhis is a renowned coach who has worked with many top players including Garry Kasparov and the Polgar sisters.
